What flights are there from the USA to Egypt?
Wikipedia’s Cairo International Airport page lists EgyptAir flights from Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles, New York JFK, Newark and Washington Dulles. That is five US gateways on one airline. The page does not give days or durations, and we could not open an airline timetable, so we state no flight time. Check the EgyptAir booking page for the days, departure hour and whether the flight is nonstop on your date.
The other route is a connection, usually through a European city on a European or Turkish airline. From the many US cities with no listed EgyptAir flight, a connection on one ticket is the normal choice. Ask the airline for the total journey time on your dates, and for what happens if the first flight is late.
A flight from the US East Coast crosses an ocean and lands in Cairo the next day. Plan the first day around your actual arrival hour, not the time the schedule promises.

Cairo is seven hours ahead of New York for most of the year. Egypt Standard Time is UTC+02:00 and its summer time is UTC+03:00, running from the last Friday of April to the last Thursday of October (Wikipedia, Time in Egypt). New York is UTC-05:00 in winter and UTC-04:00 in summer, (Wikipedia, Eastern Time Zone). NIST, a US government agency, says daylight saving time begins at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November, which in 2026 means 8 March and 1 November. Central Time is UTC-06:00 and UTC-05:00, and Pacific Time is UTC-08:00 and UTC-07:00.
| Your time zone | Hours behind Cairo, most of the year | Hours behind Cairo in the short gaps |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern | 7 | 6 |
| Central | 8 | 7 |
| Pacific | 10 | 9 |
The gaps are the weeks when one side has changed its clocks and the other has not: from the second Sunday of March to the last Friday of April, and from the last Thursday of October to the first Sunday of November. The figures come from our own arithmetic on those published offsets, so check a world clock for your exact travel dates.
Do US citizens need a visa for Egypt?
Yes. The Egypt e-Visa portal lists the United States among the nationalities that can be issued an e-Visa, with a fee of $30 for a single entry and $65 for multiple entries for tourism. It states that the passport must be valid for at least six months from the arrival date. The UK Foreign Office, which covers its own nationals, describes a visa on arrival for $30 in cash at approved airports, valid up to 30 days, and says a digital visa on arrival at Cairo Airport started on 1 August 2026 for $36 by card. We did not find a US government page that sets out the rule, so confirm with the Egyptian embassy or consulate before you pay. Our entry visa guide goes through the steps.
The UK page also says your passport must have an expiry date at least six months after arrival and at least one blank page. Read the full text of the fee and validity rules on the day you apply.
What health preparation do you need?
The US CDC Yellow Book, reviewed on 23 April 2025, recommends hepatitis A, typhoid and COVID-19 vaccines in addition to routine vaccines. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required only for travellers aged 9 months and older arriving from countries with yellow fever transmission risk, and yellow fever does not occur in Egypt. The CDC rates the risk of traveller’s diarrhoea as high, advises bottled water, and warns against contact with the Nile or irrigation canals because of schistosomiasis. Rabies is endemic, so avoid stray animals. The UK Foreign Office advises checking vaccine recommendations at least 8 weeks before travel.
The CDC says desert summers exceed 38 °C. If your dates are flexible, see when to visit Egypt.
Is it safe, and what should you check first?
Read the current advisories before booking. The Government of Canada page, last updated 26 May 2026, and the UK Foreign Office page, last updated 27 October 2026, both set out regional warnings. The US State Department advisory for Egypt is at travel.state.gov; our attempt to open it on 28 October 2026 was refused, so we do not quote it, and you should read it yourself. Experience Egypt lists the tourism hotline as 19654, the tourist police as 126 and an ambulance as 123.
How is a private tour arranged from the USA?
You send the planner the facts below, and the plan is built around them. This is a general checklist, not a statement of any company’s process.
- Travel dates and your flight arrival time. A JFK departure arrives in Cairo early the next morning, so a light first day suits most travellers.
- The number of travellers, with ages, and names exactly as printed on the passports.
- The regions you want: Cairo and Giza, Luxor and Aswan, a Nile cruise, or a desert area.
- Any dated tickets. The Grand Egyptian Museum sells timed tickets in advance on tickets.gem.eg, for example.
- Your budget in dollars, so the choices match what you want to spend.
Our trip planner collects these details, and our Egypt tour packages show the range of routes. We state no prices here.
How do you handle jet lag flying east to Cairo?
Start before you leave. The US CDC says jet lag comes from a mismatch between your body clock and a new time zone and usually appears when you cross more than three time zones. For eastward travel, which is the direction of every US to Cairo flight, it advises going to bed an hour or two earlier than usual in the days before you depart.
On arrival, the CDC says to follow the sleep and waking schedule of your destination when it is more than three hours from home, to stay in well-lit areas by day, to keep naps to 15 or 20 minutes, to drink water and to avoid alcohol. It also says to arrive at least two days before any important event. For a trip with a dated ticket on day one, that is a reason to add a buffer day at the start.
What does an arrival day look like after an overnight flight?
Keep it light. A JFK departure around mid-day lands early the next morning, as the schedule data in this guide shows, so you reach the hotel before most rooms are ready. A short walk and an early night work better than a full sightseeing day, in line with the CDC advice above.
If you want one dated activity on that day, the Grand Egyptian Museum is a flexible choice. Its ticketing site lists galleries open 9:00 to 18:00 on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 9:00 to 21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday, with last entry an hour before closing. You choose an entry period when you book, and the site says this does not limit how long you can stay. Tickets can only be used by the named person, so book once your flight and passport names are confirmed.
What are the rules at the Grand Egyptian Museum?
They are stricter than at most open-air sites. The museum’s ticketing page says bags larger than 40 by 40 centimetres go to the cloakroom, outside food and drink are not allowed and galleries permit only small water bottles. Umbrellas, tripods, selfie sticks, drones and flash are not allowed, and live streaming is banned. Re-entry after you leave is not permitted.
Personal photos on a phone or camera are allowed except in designated Tutankhamun Gallery areas. If you hire an audio guide, you leave a valid ID as a deposit. A small day bag saves a stop at the cloakroom.
What documents does the e-Visa ask for?
According to the portal’s FAQ, a tourist application needs a passport valid for at least six months from arrival, a travel itinerary that may cover your flights, and hotel bookings or details of the places you plan to visit. You pay on the site by credit or debit card after registering, and an e-Visa printout is listed as an entry requirement. A link to download the visa is sent to you.
The FAQ page we opened does not state the processing time, the length of stay or the validity before entry, so we leave those out. Read the portal the day you apply and keep a printed copy with your passport.
Will your electronics work in Egypt?
Not without an adapter. Wikipedia’s table of mains electricity lists Egypt at 220/380 V and 50 Hz with plug types C and F, and the United States at 120/240 V and 60 Hz with types A and B. US plugs do not fit Egyptian sockets. Many phone and laptop chargers accept a range of voltages, which is printed on the label, but a hair dryer or curling iron made for 120 V may not.
Check each device label for an input range that includes 220 to 240 V before you plug it in, and carry a travel adapter for plugs C and F. The table is a secondary source, so confirm the sockets at your hotel.
When should you do what before you fly?
| When | What to do | Source |
|---|---|---|
| At least 8 weeks out | Check vaccine recommendations | UK Foreign Office advice |
| When dates are fixed | Check your passport has 6 months after arrival and a blank page | e-Visa portal, UK Foreign Office |
| When the flight is confirmed | Apply for the e-Visa or plan USD 30 cash for the physical visa | e-Visa portal, UK Foreign Office |
| Once the flight is confirmed | Buy timed museum tickets in the name on the passport | Grand Egyptian Museum |
| Days before departure | Shift your bedtime earlier | US CDC |
| Before you leave home | Print the e-Visa and pack adapters for plugs C and F | e-Visa portal, Wikipedia |
What are the common mistakes for US travellers?
- Booking a hard-ticketed activity for the arrival morning, then missing it after a delayed flight.
- Assuming a US visa rule from a UK or Canadian page applies to you without checking the embassy or the portal.
- Taking a 120 V-only appliance to a 220 V country.
- Forgetting that the clocks change on different dates in the two countries, so the gap shifts from seven to six hours for a few weeks.
- Reading old fee figures: the UK page lists a digital visa that did not exist before 1 August 2026.
What should you skip, and what are the limits of this guide?
Skip trying to see everything in a week. Eastward travel, a 7-hour shift and a long flight each way take a real share of a short trip, and the CDC advises starting to adjust your sleep a few days before you go. We did not find a US government page for the visa rule or an opened US State Department advisory, and we could not open the US embassy’s citizen services page, so we do not quote them. Read them yourself before you book.
Keep readingSummer in Egypt: heat by city, beach options and how to sightseeEgypt in summer means July highs of about 41°C in Luxor and Aswan, 35°C in Cairo...How does a trip from the USA fit together?
Think in three blocks. A buffer day for arrival and recovery, the sightseeing core in Cairo and the south, and a return flight that leaves early or late in the day. Fix your flight times first, because they decide whether day one and the last day are usable or not.
What about money?
Experience Egypt says cards work in major cities and tourist destinations, while taxis and small shops remain mostly cash. The UK page says the visa on arrival is paid in US dollars cash.
Who is this guide not for?
It does not replace the embassy or airline for fees, schedules or entry rules. Those change, so confirm them close to your date.
