Egypt tours from the UK: flights, time difference, visa, FCDO advice and how a private tour is arranged

Short answer: Wikipedia's Cairo International Airport page lists EgyptAir from Heathrow, Manchester and Birmingham and British Airways from Heathrow. Which UK airports fly to Cairo?

Wikipedia’s page for Cairo International Airport lists EgyptAir flying from London Heathrow, Manchester and Birmingham, with Birmingham shown as starting on 27 October 2026. It lists British Airways from Heathrow. That makes London the only UK city with two airlines on the page.

The page does not give flight times, and we could not open an airline timetable page, so we give no duration. Days, departure hours and aircraft change by season, so the airline booking page is the final word. Check whether a listed flight stops on the way before you book.

How do the routes compare for travellers from Scotland and elsewhere?

Travellers from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle and smaller airports usually connect in London, Manchester or a European hub. A connecting ticket on one booking protects you if the first flight is late, while two separate tickets do not. If you can reach Manchester or Heathrow cheaply, compare that against a connection from your own airport, and allow a generous wait between flights.

Also look at where the flight lands. A morning arrival in Cairo leaves most of day one free, while a late-night landing means the first real day starts after a short sleep. Tell your planner the landing time so the first day matches it.

What does a short time gap mean for a short trip?

The clock gap is small, so jet lag is mild. The CDC advises matching your sleep to the destination schedule when it is more than three hours from home, which for UK travellers applies only in the few days when the gap reaches three hours. Most visitors need no more than an early night after landing.

That leaves a short break workable. A long weekend can cover Cairo and Giza alone, and a week stretches to Luxor and Aswan by air or on the river.

What is the time difference between the UK and Egypt?

Cairo is 2 hours ahead of the UK for most of the year. Egypt keeps UTC+2 for most of the year and switches to UTC+3 between the last Friday of April and the last Thursday of October. Wikipedia says this rule has been in force since 2023. The UK is on GMT in winter and on British Summer Time (UTC+1). GOV.UK says BST started on 29 March 2026 and the clocks went back on 25 October 2026, and that in 2027 BST starts on 28 March and ends on 31 October, which are the last Sundays of those months.

The two countries change their clocks on different dates, so the gap moves for a few weeks. We worked this out from those published rules.

Period UK time Egypt time Cairo is ahead by
Late October to late March, after the UK moves back and Egypt has too UTC+0 UTC+2 2 hours
Last Sunday of March to last Friday of April UTC+1 UTC+2 1 hour
Last Friday of April to last Sunday of October UTC+1 UTC+3 2 hours
Last Sunday of October to last Thursday of October UTC+0 UTC+3 3 hours

In 2026 the last window ran from 25 to 29 October. Egypt’s summer time ends at 23:59 on 29 October, the day we checked. A two-hour gap is small enough that most people feel little jet lag, which makes a short break realistic.

Do British citizens need a visa for Egypt?

Yes, in almost every case. GOV.UK says British passport holders normally need a visa. The one exception is a short stay in the Sinai beach resorts. A free entry stamp is given to travellers arriving by air at Sharm El-Sheikh who stay under 15 days in Sharm El-Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba. It does not cover a trip to Cairo or the Nile.

The options below come from GOV.UK and the official e-visa portal, checked on 29 October 2026.

Option Fee Payment Notes
E-visa, single entry $30 Card, online GOV.UK says tourist e-visas are valid up to 3 months
E-visa, multiple entry $65 Card, online Official portal FAQ
Visa on arrival, approved airports $30 Cash, US dollars Valid up to 30 days
Digital visa on arrival, Cairo $36 including a $6 service fee Card only Started 1 August 2026, self-service machines or portal
Consulate in London Set by the consulate In person or by post Fees rose by £5 from 1 March 2026

You do not need an agent. GOV.UK warns that agents often charge more than the $30 visa fee.

What does the Egyptian consulate in London handle?

It deals with visas and consular papers for people who prefer not to use the portal. Its website lists the office at 2 Lowndes Street, London SW1X 9ET. Applications are accepted between 10:30 and 13:30 and documents are collected between 14:30 and 15:30, Monday to Friday except public holidays. Visa enquiries go to visa@egyptconsulate.co.uk.

The site posts closures for religious and public holidays, so check the notices before travelling to the office. Most visitors on a one-off trip find the portal quicker.

What are the passport rules?

The passport needs an expiry date at least 6 months after the day you arrive and at least one blank page. GOV.UK says you will be denied entry without them. The e-visa portal’s FAQ gives the same six-month rule, counted from arrival.

If you hold dual nationality, GOV.UK says British citizens must carry a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement when returning to the UK. People from the Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies cannot apply online, according to the same page.

What does the FCDO say about where you can go?

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office updated its Egypt advice on 27 October 2026. It advises against all travel to North Sinai and within 20 km of the Libyan border, with a narrow exception for the town of El Salloum. It also advises against all but essential travel to the part of northern South Sinai beyond the St Catherine to Nuweiba road, to the eastern side of the Suez Canal in Ismailiyah, and to most of the Western Desert.

The Nile Valley is not covered by those warnings. The Western Desert warning leaves out Luxor, Qina, Aswan, Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings, and also Faiyum, Siwa, Bahariya, Farafra, Dakhla, Kharga and the White and Black Deserts. The Bahariya to Siwa road is the stated exception inside that list.

The page also calls the wider Middle East picture deeply unpredictable and says borders such as Taba could close at short notice. Read it again a few days before you fly, because the date at the top shows how recently it changed.

What health preparation do you need?

Start early. GOV.UK says to check the latest vaccine recommendations at least 8 weeks before you travel. TravelHealthPro, the UK’s travel health service, recommends hepatitis A for all previously unvaccinated travellers and a tetanus booster if your last dose was more than 10 years ago. Typhoid, hepatitis B and rabies are listed for some travellers, depending on activities and length of stay.

TravelHealthPro says there is no malaria risk, as the World Health Organization declared Egypt malaria-free in 2024. It does list schistosomiasis in fresh water, so avoid wading or swimming in the Nile or canals. Pools and the sea are not a risk. It also advises drinking boiled, filtered or bottled water.

If you take regular medicines, read the GOV.UK health page. The page lists some prescription and shop-bought medicines as controlled substances, says the Ministry of Health may need to give permission before you arrive, and asks you to bring a GP letter naming the condition, the quantity and the personal use.

Who do you call if something goes wrong?

For an ambulance, GOV.UK says to call 123. To report a crime, it gives the tourist police number 126 and warns that a crime is hard to prosecute later if you do not report it before leaving Egypt. Experience Egypt, the tourism board’s site, lists the tourism hotline as 19654. GOV.UK gives the British Embassy in Cairo as +20 (0)2 2791 6000.

Save these numbers in your phone before the flight. GOV.UK adds that police check ID regularly, so keep a paper or digital copy of your passport and visa to hand.

How is a private tour arranged from the UK?

The planner needs a short list of facts. Treat it as a general list, not the workflow of any single company.

  1. Your travel dates and flight times. A morning flight from Heathrow lands in the afternoon local time, so day one can include something light.
  2. Who is travelling, with ages, and names written exactly as in the passports.
  3. The regions you want: Cairo and Giza, Luxor and Aswan, a Nile cruise, or a Red Sea stay.
  4. Your visa route, so the arrival plan matches it. A cash-only kiosk visa needs dollars in your wallet.
  5. Pace and mobility, such as early starts, long walks or stairs that someone in the group would rather skip.

Our trip planner collects these details, and the tour packages show the usual routes. In a private tour the vehicle and guide serve only your party, so the day starts when you are ready. We state no prices here.

Which trip lengths suit a short flight?

The 2-hour gap and direct flights from London leave more of a short break for sightseeing than a long-haul trip does. A long weekend can cover Cairo and Giza alone, and a week stretches to Luxor and Aswan by air or on the river. Egypt’s tourism board puts most domestic flights at around an hour.

For a week with a Nile cruise, see the 7 days Cairo and Nile cruise by flight package. To choose the month, read when to visit Egypt. Both are examples of how the pieces fit together, not recommendations for every group.

What mistakes do British travellers make?

  • Reaching the arrivals hall with only cards in the wallet. The $30 kiosk visa is paid in cash, in US dollars.
  • Reading the Sinai resort stamp as a full visa. It does not cover Cairo, Luxor or Aswan.
  • Leaving vaccine advice until the last fortnight when GOV.UK says to check 8 weeks ahead.
  • Assuming the clock gap is always 2 hours. It is 1 hour in April and 3 hours in late October.
  • Carrying a medicine without a doctor’s letter when it may be on the controlled list.

What could we not confirm for UK readers?

We give no flight durations, because no airline timetable page opened for this guide. We did not find a consulate page that explains the postal visa steps, so we give only what its home page lists. Fees and rules change, which is why each is dated here. Read the portal, GOV.UK and your airline close to your travel date.
