Short answer: For a Nile cruise or tour between October and February, our advice is to book about four months ahead, and as early as your dates are fixed for Christmas and New Year. No neutral source publishes a booking window for Nile cruises. Summer brings less pressure on cabins, but the heat is the trade-off.

How far in advance should you book Egypt?
Book about 4 months ahead for the October to February cruising season, and settle Christmas and New Year as soon as your dates are fixed. Those lead times are our own rule of thumb, based on how fast winter cabins go, and not a published statistic. The dated rows below come from an official portal, a rail guide and health agencies. No source we opened gives a single number that fits every trip.
| Period | Suggested lead time | Source and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas and New Year | As soon as dates are fixed; about 4 months or more is our advice | Our own rule of thumb |
| Peak winter (October to February) | About 4 months for preferred cabin categories | Our own rule of thumb; Wikipedia gives the cruising season |
| Shoulder months and summer | Shorter lead times work, with less choice of cabin | Our own advice |
| Sleeper train | Tickets open about 4 to 5 months ahead; at least 2 days before departure through agents | Seat61, a rail guide |
| E-visa | At least 7 days before departure | Official portal |
| Travel health advice | 4 to 8 weeks before departure | TravelHealthPro, UK government |
This article was checked on 29 October 2026. If you are reading it that day, Christmas 2026 is about eight weeks away, which is shorter than the four months we suggest, so choice of cabin and hotel will already be narrower.

Winter is the season most visitors choose, and the number of visitors is rising. Egypt Independent reported on 4 January 2026, citing the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, that Egypt welcomed about 19 million tourists in 2025, up 21% on 2024. Wikipedia, a secondary source, adds that October to February is the preferred cruising period.
The supply of Nile ships is not infinite. In our experience the better cabin categories go first in peak season, and the busiest weeks sell out well before the ships do. We have no published occupancy figure to quote, so treat this as a signal rather than a promise.
Two features make cabins scarce earlier than you might expect. First, a sailing runs on fixed weekly days, so there are few departures to choose from. Second, small boats have few cabins, so one party can use up a large share of a sailing.
If your dates are fixed, book the cruise and the hotels first. If your dates are flexible, ask for several sailing dates and choose the one with the cabin you want.
When should you book for Christmas and New Year?
For Christmas and New Year, book as early as you can, ideally 4 months ahead or more. Bookings inside four weeks of departure are possible but leave little choice of hotel and cabin. Prices at Christmas reflect peak demand.
Coptic Christmas falls on 7 January, and the Coptic Church calendar lists the Christmas Fast beginning on 25 November 2026. OfficeHolidays (a secondary source) lists 7 January 2027 as a national holiday, a Thursday. The State Information Service reports that the Prime Minister’s decision for 2025 made 7 January an official paid holiday for government, public sector and private sector employees, so confirm the 2027 decision nearer the date. A trip that spans Western and Coptic Christmas can therefore cover two holiday periods in two weeks. We cover what to expect on the ground in our guide to Christmas vacation in Egypt.
For these weeks, ask early for three things in writing: the ship category and cabin you are being held, the date the deposit is due, and the date the booking is released if the deposit is not paid. A hold with no deadline is not a booking.
When should you book for Easter and the spring holidays?
For Easter, book as soon as your dates are fixed, and earlier if you plan to use the sleeper train. Seat61 says that at busy times such as Easter the sleeper is fully booked by tour groups, so booking ahead is strongly recommended. Coptic Easter in 2027 falls on Sunday 2 May, per the Coptic Church calendar, and Sham El Nessim, the spring holiday, follows on Monday 3 May, according to OfficeHolidays.
The OfficeHolidays list for 2027 also shows other dates that can move a plan: Labour Day on Saturday 1 May, Eid al-Fitr from 9 to 11 March and Eid al-Adha from 16 to 18 May. The Islamic dates depend on moon sightings and may differ by a day, so check them again closer to the date.
April and May warm up quickly in the south. The World Weather Information Service, which publishes Egyptian Meteorological Authority data for 1981 to 2010, gives Aswan mean daytime highs of 29.4 °C in March, 35.2 °C in April and 39.0 °C in May, so an Easter trip is a case for early starts, not for long midday visits.
Can you book Egypt in summer at the last minute?
Yes, with less pressure on cabins, but the heat is the trade-off. Summer sailings face less pressure than winter ones, but summer is very hot. The same service gives mean daytime highs of 41.2 to 41.4 °C in Aswan from June to August and about 35 °C in Cairo.
Cruise timing matters at the edge of the season. Wikipedia says locks on the Nile generally close from about mid-April to manage water levels, and that passengers change boats at the locks. If your trip falls in April, ask how the cruise sections are run before you pay.
Late booking in summer suits a flexible traveller, a Cairo or coastal plan, and anyone who values low pressure over choice. It does not suit a traveller with a fixed week and a specific ship.
Which tickets and reservations need the earliest booking?
The earliest items are the Nile cabin, the sleeper train in peak times, and timed museum tickets. They share one feature: a limited number of places.
- Nile cabin: about 4 months in peak season for preferred categories, which is our own advice.
- Sleeper train: Seat61 says tickets typically open 4 to 5 months ahead, though this varies, and that you must book at least 2 days ahead through the booking sites it lists. It adds that berths may be available a day or two in advance outside busy times.
- Grand Egyptian Museum: entry is by timed slot, and the booking page shows “Sold Out” and “Maximum capacity has been reached” messages for some slots. The page gives no fixed lead time. Tickets are valid only for the date and time chosen, so pick the slot with care.
- Abu Simbel on 22 February or 22 October: the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities lists a higher foreign adult ticket on those two dates, when the sun reaches the innermost statues. If you want those dates, fix them before anything else.
With a private package, the company arranges these items for you, so the practical step is to give your dates early. The company then secures the cabin and slots, and you keep the right to ask what has been held.
When should you book flights?
Book flights after the cruise and hotel nights are confirmed, not before. The opened sources give no Egypt-specific flight window, and published studies of airfares disagree with each other by country and by year, so we give no day count. A cabin that sells out is much harder to replace than a seat on another flight.
The safe order is: confirm the sailing and hotel dates, then buy flights that arrive before the first night and leave after the last. Check the baggage rules of each airline, particularly for internal flights if your package has them.
If your package includes internal flights, the company books them with the tour, as listed. International flights stay with you.

Start both at least a month before the trip, and the health step earlier. The official e-visa portal states that you must create an application at least 7 days before departure. The UK government lists a tourist e-visa valid for up to 3 months, and a $30 visa on arrival at approved airport kiosks.
For health advice, the UK government says to check vaccine recommendations at least 8 weeks before travel, and TravelHealthPro advises seeing a health professional at least four to six weeks before travel. The CDC lists hepatitis A and typhoid among recommended vaccines for most travellers. Your own doctor decides what you need.
Passport rules decide the real deadline. The UK government says the passport must expire at least 6 months after your arrival date and have a blank page. A passport renewal can take longer than any other step on this list, so check the date first.
What if you are already inside the window?
You still have options, and each one trades something. Late bookings are possible but leave less choice, so be ready to bend on one of these.
- Move the dates by a week or two. A different sailing day can open a cabin.
- Change the cabin category. A lower-deck cabin is cheaper and often easier to find.
- Change the route. A Cairo and Luxor plan by road needs no cabin.
- Shorten the cruise. A 3-night sailing from Aswan to Luxor is an alternative to 4 nights the other way.
- Move to the shoulder. October, March and April sit at the edge of the cruising season, with less pressure on cabins than December and January.
Send your dates and the number of travellers through the plan my trip form and we will say plainly what is available. If you would rather see the options first, start with the Egypt tour packages or the Nile cruise pages.
What is a sensible booking timeline?
A sensible timeline works backwards from departure. For a peak-season trip, the cruise and hotels come first, the visa and health steps come last. For summer, compress the left side and keep the right side.
- Six months out: choose the month, check the passport date and ask for quotes.
- Four months out: confirm the cruise category and hotel nights, and pay the deposit.
- Three months out: buy international flights that fit the confirmed dates.
- Two months out: book health advice and vaccines.
- One month out: check the timed tickets and the sleeper train if they are in your plan.
- One week out: apply for the e-visa at the latest.
