When is Easter in Egypt in 2027?
Coptic Easter is on Sunday 2 May 2027. The Coptic Church feast calendar lists Palm Sunday on 25 April, Good Friday on 30 April and the start of Great Lent on 8 March. Christmas in the same calendar is 7 January.
The church sets Easter by its own calendar, which is why the date can differ from western Easter. The same calendar for 2026 gives Easter as 12 April, so the 2026 feast has already passed.

Sham el-Nessim is on Monday 3 May 2027, the day after Coptic Easter. OfficeHolidays (a secondary source) lists it as a national holiday. In 2026 it fell on Monday 13 April, a paid holiday declared by Prime Minister Madbouly (Ahram Online, 6 April 2026). Its date follows Easter, but Egyptian Streets describes it as a spring festival with no religious meaning.
Egyptian Streets gives two theories for the name: an Arabized phrase meaning roughly “gardens and meadows”, or Shamo, the ancient Egyptian word for the harvest season. It traces the festival back as far as about 4,500 years, though the origin is a matter of tradition rather than firm evidence.
The customs are simple:
- Families picnic outdoors, traditionally at dawn, in gardens and meadows.
- Children paint eggs, a custom thought to be ancient.
- The traditional meal includes spring onions, eggs, ringa (smoked herring) and fesikh (salt-cured mullet).
Al-Ahram Online lists Cairo gardens where people gather, including Al-Orman Garden near Cairo University, Al-Azbakkia Garden downtown, the Fish Garden in Zamalek and Al-Andalus Garden by the Nile.
A note on fesikh: it is cured, not cooked. The US CDC advises travellers to avoid raw meat and seafood, so many visitors skip it and stay with the eggs, onions and bread.
What is Coptic Holy Week and Great Lent like for visitors?
Great Lent starts on 8 March 2027, nearly two months before Easter. Gulf News quotes a Copt describing the Christmas fast as abstaining from meat, poultry and dairy. Ask your guide or hotel what the Lenten fast means for the menu.
Holy Week services are held in churches, including the Hanging Church in Old Cairo, which the Ministry page lists as open from 9:00 to 16:00 for visits. Services are worship, not performances. Ask your guide or hotel before you go in.
What is the weather in Egypt at Easter?
Spring is the shoulder between mild winter and hot summer, and the south warms fast. These are 1981 to 2010 averages published by the World Meteorological Organization’s World Weather Information Service, which takes them from the Egyptian Meteorological Authority.
| City | April high / low | May high / low |
|---|---|---|
| Cairo | 28.2°C / 15.4°C | 31.9°C / 18.4°C |
| Alexandria | 24.0°C / 15.3°C | 26.3°C / 17.1°C |
| Luxor | 35.3°C / 16.9°C | 39.0°C / 21.2°C |
| Aswan | 35.2°C / 19.9°C | 39.0°C / 23.1°C |
| Hurghada | 29.3°C / 18.3°C | 31.8°C / 22.4°C |
| Sharm el-Sheikh | 30.1°C / 20.3°C | 34.2°C / 23.9°C |
Easter 2027 sits between the two columns for the Nile Valley, so plan for hot afternoons in Luxor and Aswan. Wikivoyage (a secondary source) also warns that sand storms may occur from March to May, mainly in the daytime.
Start early in Upper Egypt. The Ministry pages, checked on 28 October 2026, list Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel from 6:00 to 17:00, and the Great Pyramid from 7:00 to 17:00.
What should you expect at sites and hotels?
On Sham el-Nessim itself, expect public gardens, riversides and zoos to be full of local families. Monuments listed on the Ministry pages show the same hours every day of the week unless a notice says otherwise. We found no holiday closures, but check on the day.
We found no published hotel occupancy for Easter weekends. The calendar suggests a busy local fortnight: OfficeHolidays lists national holidays on 25 April, 1 May, 2 May and 3 May 2027, and Eid el-Kebir from 16 May. That is our reading of the dates, not a measured figure. Islamic holiday dates move with the moon, so recheck them closer to the time.
Book rooms early for the long weekend if you plan a beach stop on the Red Sea or Mediterranean. For sightseeing, see the day tours from Cairo and Giza, or the Nile cruises between Luxor and Aswan, and use plan my trip to check dates.
How should you plan the Easter weeks?
The 2027 calendar is crowded, so the order of steps matters.
- Fix the dates first. Sinai Liberation Day is on Sunday 25 April, Labour Day on Saturday 1 May, Coptic Easter on Sunday 2 May and Sham el-Nessim on Monday 3 May (OfficeHolidays).
- Check the next holiday block. Arafat Day is on 15 May and Eid el-Kebir runs from 16 May, with the last day, 19 May, listed as a government holiday only. OfficeHolidays notes that Islamic dates depend on moon sightings.
- Put Cairo and Giza on days that are not Sham el-Nessim if you want calmer public spaces.
- Book the Luxor and Aswan leg for the first hours of the day, since afternoons reach 35°C in April and 39°C in May.
The Grand Egyptian Museum lists hours for every day of the week with no closing day. On Wednesday and Saturday the complex stays open until 22:00 and the galleries until 21:00, which suits a late visit when the day is hot. Admission stops an hour before the galleries close.
Who suits Easter in Egypt, and who does not?
It suits travellers who want to see Egyptians at a family holiday and who accept early starts in the south. It is a good spring window for Cairo, Alexandria and the Red Sea.
It is not ideal if you want quiet public gardens on 3 May, or if you cannot take 39°C afternoons in Luxor or Aswan. A late April trip is cooler than mid-May.
Which Coptic dates matter in 2027?
Seven dates shape a visit around Easter. The Coptic Church feast calendar for 2027 lists them as follows.
| Date | Observance |
|---|---|
| 22 February | Fast of Nineveh |
| 8 March | Great Lent begins |
| 7 April | Annunciation |
| 25 April | Palm Sunday |
| 29 and 30 April | Holy Thursday and Good Friday |
| 2 May | Easter |
| 9 May | Thomas Sunday |
The same calendar puts Ascension on 10 June and Pentecost on 20 June. Palm Sunday on 25 April starts Holy Week, and a church visit that week is best arranged through your hotel or guide.
Can a dust wind spoil an Easter plan?
Occasionally, for a few hours. Wikipedia says the hot, dusty khamsin usually arrives in April, though it can come between March and May, and that a storm rarely strikes more than once a week. Our spring guide explains the wind in detail.
For Easter week the practical step is simple: keep one outdoor session flexible and carry sunglasses and a scarf.
How warm is the sea if you add a beach stop?
Warm enough for most people on the Red Sea by May, but cool on the Mediterranean coast. The figures below come from the climate tables on Wikipedia, a secondary source, because the weather service does not publish sea temperatures.
| Place | April sea temperature | May sea temperature |
|---|---|---|
| Hurghada | 22°C | 24°C |
| Alexandria | 18°C | 20°C |
Alexandria’s average rainfall is 2.6 mm in April and 1.0 mm in May (World Weather Information Service), with humidity around 65 percent (Wikipedia). Hurghada records about 285.6 sunshine hours in April and 317.4 in May (NOAA 1961 to 1990 normals). In plain terms, the Red Sea beats Alexandria for swimming at Easter, and Alexandria suits a walk more than a swim.
Why is Sham el-Nessim not a religious holiday?
It grew out of a seasonal festival that people of several faiths kept. Wikipedia says the date always follows Eastern Christian Easter, that the Coptic date is calculated by the Aqbati method, and that the festival is observed by Egyptians of all religions. The Arabic name is translated there as “Smelling in the Zephyrs” and linked to the ancient harvest season Shemu.
The same article gives details a brochure leaves out. In the Fatimid period the state ran an official procession through Cairo led by the caliph. Medieval customs included writing wishes on eggshells and hanging them from trees. Lettuce was linked to fertility and the god Min, onions to embalming, and eggs to the cosmic egg, while fish and eggs are resurrection symbols for Christians.

- Pick a public garden away from the main roads and arrive early. Wikipedia says people traditionally spend the whole day outdoors.
- Bring your own water, a hat and sunscreen. The CDC advises a hat, sunglasses and light loose clothing, and says thirst is a late sign of dehydration.
- Buy food from stalls only if you are comfortable with street food. The CDC says to eat thoroughly cooked food and to be careful with raw salads and uncooked vegetables.
- Leave by mid-afternoon. Roads back to the centre are slower once families head home.
The last point is our own planning advice, not a sourced fact.
What are the common mistakes?
- Planning a taxi-heavy day on 3 May. Parks and riversides are full, so travel is slower around them.
- Confusing the two Easters. Western Easter and Coptic Easter are on different dates in many years.
- Assuming Lent affects all restaurants. Great Lent is a church practice with its own fasting rules, so ask your guide which dishes are Lenten if you want to try them.
- Visiting Upper Egypt at midday. April highs reach 35°C in Luxor and Aswan, and May highs reach about 39°C.
- Ignoring the following holiday block. Eid el-Kebir begins on 16 May.
What should you skip?
Skip a midday Nile Valley itinerary and any plan that depends on a holiday opening time you have not confirmed. Skip a first swim in Alexandria in April, when the sea is 18°C.
We could not confirm church access for visitors during Holy Week, the number of visitors at Easter, or any holiday closing times for the Ministry sites.
