Why travellers choose this trip

This route goes one step further than the 3-day trip: after the White Desert you continue south to Farafra, the oasis that lies roughly midway between Bahariya and Dakhla. Farafra is the least populated depression in the Western Desert, with about 5,000 people at the last estimate on record.

You camp one night in the White Desert and sleep the second night in Farafra town, where you can wash and rest. The two oases are different in character. Bahariya has the farms and the mummies, Farafra has the springs and the quiet.

It suits travellers who want to see the White Desert and a second oasis without a week-long trip. It is less suited to anyone who dislikes long drives: you cover the Cairo road twice, plus the track between the oases.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1
Day 1 · Bahariya OasisCairo to Bahariya

Pick-up. The private vehicle and driver collect you from your Cairo hotel in the morning and drive about 370 km to Bahariya. Lunch is included and taken on the way, and bottled water is in the vehicle.

Afternoon. Once you reach the oasis, your local desert guide walks you through the farms of the oasis. The pace is easy after the long drive, and you have time to ask about the place before dinner.

Evening. Dinner and the night are in a hotel in Bahariya. Breakfast is included the next morning, before the desert tracks begin.

Day 2 · White DesertBlack Desert to the White Desert

Morning. You swap the car for a 4x4 after breakfast, and your guide travels with you. The track runs south through the Black Desert, where the hills are capped with dark basalt, and reaches the White Desert around the middle of the day. Lunch is included.

Afternoon. The afternoon is for walking among the chalk formations with your guide. Camp is set up near them.

Evening. Dinner is cooked on the fire. The park lies in the Farafra depression and was first protected in 2002. Your guide follows the camp rules inside the protected area. UK government advice says visitors to Bahariya, Farafra, the White Desert and the Black Desert must apply for permits in advance and use an official guide. We arrange the permits and confirm them when you book.

Day 3 · Farafra OasisWhite Desert to Farafra

Morning. Start the day with the sunrise light on the chalk. Breakfast comes with the camp night. Then you break camp. The White Desert is about 45 km north of Qasr Al Farafra, so the drive to the town is short.

Afternoon. In Farafra you stop at Bir Sitta, one of more than 100 wells in the oasis. Its water is warm and slightly sulphurous. Your guide tells you on the day whether swimming is possible. Lunch is included. The rest of the afternoon is free in the old town, where Badr's museum stands.

Evening. Dinner and the night are in Farafra, in accommodation we confirm when you book.

Day 4 · CairoBack through Bahariya to Cairo

Morning. After breakfast your driver takes you north to Bahariya, where you stop at the site of the Valley of the Golden Mummies, a Greco-Roman necropolis found in 1996. Your guide explains what was found there, and you have time to walk around the site. Opening status and ticket rules are confirmed when you book.

Return. Lunch is included, then comes the road to Cairo, with your driver and bottled water in the vehicle. Timings for the return are confirmed when you book. The drop-off is at your Cairo hotel or the airport. Plan a late-evening flight or the next day.

FAQ

Questions about this trip

Still unsure? Message us on WhatsApp and a real person from our team will answer.

How far is Farafra from the White Desert?

The park is about 45 km north of Qasr Al Farafra. The track in between is short compared with the rest of the trip.

Why camp one night and use a hotel on the others?

One night in the formations is enough for the sunset and the stars, and the nights in town give you a shower and a proper bed after long driving days.

How cold does it get at Farafra?

Summer highs average about 38 degrees C, with a record of 47.8. Winters are mild by day, but nights can drop below freezing, so bring warm layers from October to March.

Can I add Dakhla?

Not on this schedule. Dakhla lies on the other side of Farafra and needs extra days.
