Egypt desert regions: permits, seasons and safety rules for oases, White Desert, Siwa, Fayoum and Sinai

Short answer: Egypt has desert trips in the Western Desert oases, in Fayoum, in South Sinai and in the Red Sea hills. Rules differ by area: the UK Foreign Office says the White and Black deserts need permits arranged in advance and an official guide, and off-road travel needs a Ministry of Interior permit.

What do the Western Desert oases offer?

Bahariya Oasis is about 370 km from Cairo and runs roughly 94 km long and up to 42 km wide, according to Wikipedia. It is the usual gateway to the White Desert: Wikipedia places the Black Desert between Bahariya and the White Desert.

Farafra lies roughly midway between Dakhla and Bahariya. Our White Desert guide covers the formations, Crystal Mountain, camping and the permit rule in detail.

What is a Siwa trip like?

Siwa is in Matrouh Governorate, about 560 km from Cairo and 50 km east of the Libyan border, and it lies about 19 m below sea level (Wikipedia). The Agency also lists a Siwa protected area, declared in 2002 as a national park of 7,731 km² in Matrouh. The oasis has the fragmentary remains of the Oracle of Amun at Aghurmi, a spring called Cleopatra’s Bath, and the Shali fortress, which rises five storeys above the modern town. Wikipedia says only a paved road to the coast, built in the 1980s, ended the oasis’s isolation.

The road needs planning. The Government of Canada advice, last updated 26 May 2026, says there is one petrol station on the roughly 300 km road from Marsa Matruh and that the road is poorly lit and partly unpaved. It recommends fuelling in Marsa Matruh, carrying water and cash, travelling only in daylight and expecting military checkpoints. The UK advice calls the Bawiti to Siwa road closed with military checkpoints. Both treat Siwa itself as an exception to the wider Western Desert warning.

What can you do in the Fayoum desert?

Fayoum is the closest desert area to Cairo. Wadi Al-Hitan was added to the World Heritage List in July 2005. The Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency calls it Egypt’s first natural World Heritage Site, for whale skeletons about 40 million years old, and Wikipedia adds that it lies about 150 km southwest of Cairo and names early whales such as Basilosaurus and Dorudon. It sits inside the Wadi El Rayan protected area, which the Agency lists as declared in 1989 and covering 1,757.9 km² in Faiyum. Its two lakes began forming in 1973, and the Agency says the waterfalls are the only permanent falls in Egypt. Wikipedia puts the protectorate about 65 km southwest of Fayoum city, describes the lakes as man-made, notes mobile sand dunes south of the lower lake and says it became a Ramsar wetland in 2012.

The UK lists Faiyum among the exceptions to its Western Desert warning. Our Wadi El Hitan Whale Valley day tour from Cairo covers the fossils.

What about Sinai?

St Catherine’s Monastery in South Sinai was built between 548 and 565 on the orders of Emperor Justinian I and has been a World Heritage Site since 2002, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, which places it on the slopes of Mount Sinai. The surrounding St Catherine protected area, declared in 1988, covers 4,412 km² of South Sinai (Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency). Government advice is more cautious in the north of the peninsula. The UK advises against all travel to North Sinai and against all but essential travel to northern South Sinai beyond the St Catherine to Nuweiba road, with coastal areas excepted. Canada advises against non-essential travel north of the St Catherine to Nuweiba to El Tor road. If you drive a 4×4 from mainland Egypt to Sinai via the Suez crossing you need a permit from the Ministry of Interior’s Travel Permits Department.

Is there a desert safari on the Red Sea side?

Yes, in the Eastern Desert, which covers about 223,000 km² between the Nile and the Red Sea (Wikipedia). Its Red Sea Hills run parallel to the coast, with peaks around 1,500 m and a highest point of 2,184 m. The UK advice says that off-road travel needs a qualified guide and a Ministry of Interior permit.

Which season suits a desert trip?

The cooler months suit every area in this guide. Mean daily maximums are 19.8 °C in January and 37.1 °C in July at Bahariya, 20.0 °C and 37.8 °C at Farafra, and 19.8 °C and 40.2 °C at Siwa (Wikipedia). Summer heat above 38 °C is normal in the desert (US CDC). For the full national picture, read when to visit Egypt.

What safety and permit rules apply?

  • Expect limited phone reception in the White and Black deserts (UK).
  • Carry plenty of water and tell someone your route, because help can be far away.
  • Do not fly a drone without Ministry of Defence permission. Unauthorised use can bring up to 7 years in prison or a fine (UK).
  • Re-check the live advice before travel. Official pages change, and the US State Department advisory should be read directly at travel.state.gov.

What is the White Desert National Park?

The Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency lists it as a Landscape Protected Area declared in 2002 by Prime Minister’s Decree No. 1220, covering 3,133.5 km² in New Valley governorate. Wikipedia places it in the Farafra depression, 45 km north of Qasr Al Farafra and 570 km southwest of Cairo. The highest point is El Qess Abu Said at 353 m and the lowest is Wadi Hennis at 32 m.

The park has large white chalk formations shaped by wind and sand erosion, cliffs at the northern end of the Farafra depression, dunes that belong to the Great Sand Sea, and the springs of Ain El Maqfi and Ain El Wadi. Wikipedia lists fennec foxes, rhim and dorcas gazelles, Barbary sheep, jackals and sand cats among its wildlife, so a night in camp can include tracks in the morning sand. Wikipedia carries a maintenance note on this article, so treat the figures as a guide.

Who should skip a desert safari?

Skip it if you dislike long drives, basic facilities or heat. Travellers with mobility limits or on tight timetables are better served by Fayoum or a day outing. To combine a desert area with the main sites, use our trip planner.

How do the trips compare for time and effort?

Distance from Cairo is the first filter, because it decides how many days you lose to the road. The figures below are the ones already quoted in this guide.

Area Distance from Cairo Where the official advice stands
Wadi Al-Hitan, Fayoum About 150 km Fayoum is an exception to the UK Western Desert warning
Bahariya About 370 km White and Black deserts: permits in advance and an official guide
Siwa About 560 km Town and the Marsa Matruh road are exceptions; the Bawiti road is closed

Siwa is therefore roughly one and a half times as far as Bahariya, which is why it rarely fits a short break. If you only have a long weekend, Fayoum or Bahariya is the realistic choice.

What makes Siwa different from the other oases?

It is a Berber-speaking community with its own festivals and language. Wikipedia says about 25,000 people live in Siwa, that the Siwi language is the easternmost Berber language, and that the whole population now speaks Arabic as well.

The same article counts about 200 natural springs and two large salt lakes fed by agricultural drainage, and describes Gebel al-Mawta as a Roman-era necropolis with dozens of rock-cut tombs. The Siyaha festival honours Sidi Sulayman and lasts three lunar days, when Siwi men gather on Gabal Al-Dakrour to eat, sing and reconcile. Ask a local guide whether you can attend, and do not turn up uninvited with a camera.

Siwa lies in the eastern part of the Great Sand Sea, which Wikipedia puts at about 72,000 km², roughly 650 km from north to south and 300 km from east to west, running into Libya.

How dry and sunny is the desert?

Very. Wikipedia gives Siwa an average annual rainfall of 12 mm on about two days a year, with about 3,555 hours of sunshine and a record high of 48.2°C. That is the 1991 to 2020 normal and an old record, not a forecast.

The practical result is that shade is scarce, nights are cold in winter, and rain is not a planning factor. The US CDC says that thirst is a late sign of dehydration, so drink on a schedule, and wear a hat, sunglasses and loose light clothing.

How do you choose and book a desert trip?

  1. Read the current UK Foreign Office regional risks page, and the Canada page, on the day you book. Both change.
  2. Pick the area from the table above. Do not combine Siwa and the White Desert in a short trip unless a guide has worked out the road for you.
  3. Confirm in writing who applies for the permit and how far ahead. The UK page says permits for the White and Black deserts must be applied for in advance.
  4. Agree the vehicle, the support vehicle and the camping set-up before you pay. Tent, bedding and food arrangements vary, and we found no official standard.
  5. Tell someone your route. Phone reception is limited in the White and Black deserts, according to the UK page.

What should you pack?

  • Layers. Desert days and nights differ by many degrees, and Experience Egypt gives about 15°C for an average winter night across the country.
  • A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf for dust.
  • More water than seems necessary, plus a refill plan.
  • Cash in small notes for the oases. Canada advises carrying water and cash on the Siwa road.
  • A power bank for long days away from sockets.

What are the common mistakes?

  • Driving the Siwa road at night. Canada says the road is poorly lit and recommends daylight only.
  • Taking the Bawiti to Siwa road. The UK page calls it closed with military checkpoints.
  • Flying a drone. The UK page says unauthorised use can bring up to 7 years in prison or a fine.
  • Assuming all Sinai is open. The UK advises against all travel to North Sinai.
  • Underestimating the drive. Siwa is about 560 km from Cairo, and a long day in a car is part of the price.

What should you skip?

Skip the south-western corner near the Sudan and Libya borders. The UK page says it needs a Ministry of Interior permit and warns that bandits and armed groups operate there. Skip any trip that cannot name its guide and its permit arrangements.

We could not confirm a single official source for desert tour standards, camp rules or fees. Experience Egypt pages on desert excursions, which we opened, carry no trip lengths or permit details, so confirm the details and check the government advice.
