Honeymoon in Egypt: best months, etiquette and what couples should plan

Short answer: Most honeymoon routes combine Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, then finish on a Nile cruise or the Red Sea. Winter suits it: Luxor's daytime highs run 23 to 25 degrees Celsius from December to February, against 41 in June and July. Carry a passport valid for 6 months after arrival, and keep public affection low-key; holding hands is generally fine.

Which honeymoon routes work in Egypt?

Four patterns cover most plans, and each can be done in one to two weeks. Choose by how much you want to see and how much you want to rest.

Route What it gives you Watch out for
Cairo, Luxor, Aswan Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, then Karnak and the Valley of the Kings, then Philae Early starts; several hotel changes
Cairo plus a Nile cruise Hotel base in Cairo, then a ship between Luxor and Aswan with Edfu and Kom Ombo on the way The ship’s timetable sets your pace
Cairo plus the Red Sea Two days of pyramids, then beach days at Hurghada Check your government’s advice for the area you choose
Cairo plus Alexandria A Mediterranean city with a fort, a library and gardens Wetter than the south, so check the forecast

Which months suit a honeymoon in Egypt?

For Luxor and Aswan, winter is the comfortable season. The Luxor climate table from the World Meteorological Organization’s World Weather Information Service (Egyptian Meteorological Authority data, 1981-2010) shows mean daytime highs of 23.0 degrees Celsius in January, 24.3 in December, 25.1 in February, 29.5 in March and 29.0 in November. Summer highs reach 41.3 in June, 41.4 in July and 41.0 in August. Experience Egypt says the Red Sea, Luxor and Aswan are warm and sunny in winter.

The coast is different. The Mediterranean coast gets more rain than the south: the same service shows 13.1 mm in Alexandria in March against 0.4 mm in Luxor, and about 5 mm a year in Luxor (the twelve monthly averages add up to 5.2 mm). If you want both temples and a beach in winter, the Red Sea is the drier pairing, and Experience Egypt describes Hurghada as having year-long sunshine. Ask your hotel for sea and air temperatures for your month before you pack.

What does each stop offer a couple?

Cairo and Giza are the base. The Giza Plateau opens 8:00 to 16:00 and the Great Pyramid 7:00 to 17:00. The Grand Egyptian Museum opened officially on 1 November 2025, and on Wednesday and Saturday its galleries stay open until 21:00, which gives you an evening option (tickets.gem.eg, UNESCO).

In Luxor, evening visits are possible: Luxor Temple stays open until 20:00 (Ministry). It sits about three kilometres south of Karnak and hosted the Opet Festival, when images of Amun, Mut and Khonsu were carried from Karnak. On the west bank, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s temple open at 6:00, so start early to avoid the heat.

In Aswan, Philae is reached by boat, according to Experience Egypt. The same page lists felucca rides, Nubian villages and afternoon tea with sunset views from a hotel terrace over the river. Kom Ombo Temple, between Luxor and Aswan, is open until 21:00, so a cruise or road stop there can run into the evening.

Alexandria was founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great and is Egypt’s second-largest city (Experience Egypt). Qaitbay Citadel, built in the late 1470s on the remains of the ancient Lighthouse, is open 9:00 to 20:00 (Ministry). The Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Montazah gardens are other stops listed by Experience Egypt.

Which place is warmest from December to March?

The Red Sea coast is not warmer than the Nile Valley in winter. The table uses the 1981 to 2010 averages from the World Weather Information Service (Egyptian Meteorological Authority data) as daytime highs in degrees Celsius.

Month Luxor Aswan Hurghada
December 24.3 24.2 23.2
January 23.0 22.9 21.7
February 25.1 24.8 22.7
March 29.5 29.4 25.4

Hurghada’s nights are milder than Luxor’s, with a January mean low of 11.2 against 5.9. The sea is the limit: Wikipedia (a secondary source, since the weather service has no sea data) gives Hurghada a mean sea temperature of 21 degrees in February and March, rising to 28 in August. For swimming without a wetsuit, March is cool and later months are kinder.

What can couples do on the Red Sea coast?

Experience Egypt lists snorkelling and diving, boat trips around the Giftun Islands with dolphin watching, and a full beach day on Mahmeya Island. It also lists quad biking and jeep trips over the dunes, and camel rides along the beach with a Bedouin guide. Hurghada lies 455 km from Cairo by road, according to Wikipedia (secondary), so most couples fly.

Sea temperature decides how much of this you will enjoy. Hurghada’s mean sea temperature rises from 21 degrees in February and March to 28 in August, according to Wikipedia, so couples travelling in winter should treat the beach as a sunny rest day rather than a swimming holiday.

What does a couple’s day in Luxor and Aswan look like?

Start early in Luxor, because the Valley of the Kings opens at 6:00 and closes at 17:00 every day, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The page says the valley holds over sixty tombs and about twenty unfinished ones. The Ministry lists the foreign adult ticket on that page (checked 29 October 2026), in the local currency only, so check the page again before you travel.

In Aswan, Philae is open daily from 7:00 to 16:00, with a foreign adult ticket listed on the same page. The Ministry says the main temple was dedicated to Isis and that all the monuments were moved from the original island to Agilkia during the UNESCO Nubia Campaign in the 1960s, after the Aswan High Dam flooded the site. That history gives the visit a clear thread: you are walking through a temple that was rebuilt stone by stone on higher ground.

A sensible split for two people who want to rest is one big site in the morning, lunch and a quiet afternoon at the hotel, then a short evening outing. Luxor Temple stays open later than most sites, which makes it the natural evening stop.

How many nights does each stop need?

Give each base at least two nights, because the first and last days are lost to travel. These patterns are suggestions, not published itineraries.

Trip length Pattern Pace
7 nights Cairo 2, Luxor 2, Aswan 2, back to Cairo 1 Fast, two flights, early starts
10 nights Cairo 3, Luxor 3, Aswan 2, Red Sea 2 Balanced, one slow end
14 nights Cairo 3, Nile cruise 4, Aswan 2, Red Sea 5 Relaxed, beach week at the end

Put the beach last. The temples open early and the south is hot from May to September, so a rest week at the end gives you the recovery after the early starts, not before them. If your dates fall in summer, every stop is hot: the mean July high is 41.4 in Luxor and 35.0 in Hurghada, so keep sightseeing to the first hours of the day and spend the afternoons indoors or in the water.

What should the evenings look like?

Plan the evenings around closing times, not around dinner. Luxor Temple stays open until 20:00 and Kom Ombo until 21:00 on the Ministry pages, and the Grand Egyptian Museum galleries close at 21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday. In Aswan, Experience Egypt suggests afternoon tea and the sunset at a hotel terrace, and a visit to the botanical garden, which it calls a peaceful afternoon stop.

Be careful with one suggestion. Experience Egypt says a felucca captain can take you to a beach for a safe Nile swim, near Gharb Soheil or a small island near Philae. The CDC advises against swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water such as rivers because of schistosomiasis. The two pages disagree, and we would follow the CDC.

What mistakes spoil a honeymoon route?

  • Changing hotel every night. Each base in the table above deserves at least two nights, and a third if you want a rest day between sites.
  • Adding the Western Desert on a short trip. GOV.UK advises against all but essential travel in most of it, with named exceptions such as Siwa, Bahariya, Farafra, Dakhla and Kharga, so check the current text first.
  • Packing Luxor and Aswan into one rushed day. The Valley of the Kings is open from 6:00 to 17:00 and Philae from 7:00 to 16:00 (Ministry pages, checked 29 October 2026), so the two need separate days.
  • Leaving the Red Sea until the last day before a long flight home. Keep a buffer for delays, and book the transfer to the airport with time to spare.

What about a Nile cruise on a honeymoon?

A cruise means one cabin for the whole sailing and sightseeing built into the days. Most modern Nile cruises run from Luxor to Aswan (Wikipedia, a secondary source). The CDC notes a norovirus risk on Nile cruises, so wash hands often. Ask whether cabins are double or twin before you book. Ship pages are listed under Nile cruises.

What documents do couples need?

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you arrive and have at least one blank page (GOV.UK, checked 28 October 2026). Canada states the rule as 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave, so use whichever is longer. Most nationalities need a visa. GOV.UK lists 30 US dollars on arrival, or 36 US dollars for a digital visa at Cairo airport from 1 August 2026, and says tourist e-visas are valid for up to 3 months. The official e-visa site is visa2egypt.gov.eg.

The GOV.UK and Canadian advice pages we opened, checked on 28 October 2026, do not mention hotel check-in rules for couples or marriage certificates, so we make no claim about them. Ask your hotel what it needs when you book. Carry your passports and a copy of your booking confirmations for hotel check-in.

What local customs should couples know?

GOV.UK advises that couples showing physical affection in public is frowned upon, holding hands is generally fine, and behaviour accepted in tourist resort areas may not be accepted elsewhere. Canada says overt public displays of affection are frowned upon. Both advise modest dress: GOV.UK suggests modest clothing in rural areas, mosques and souqs, and Experience Egypt says shoulders and legs must be covered at mosques, churches and synagogues.

Alcohol is served in restaurants, bars and certain tourist resorts. GOV.UK says drinking in other public places is against the law and may lead to arrest. Taking pictures of children is prohibited, and you need a permit for professional photography equipment, so ask your photographer to check before you land (GOV.UK).

Which honeymoon plan does not suit everyone?

It does not suit couples who want a beach-only week with no early starts, because the temples open at 6:00 and the south is hot from May to September. If you would like a route planned around your dates, send a brief through plan my trip or start from Egypt tour packages.
