This week goes south in the classic direction. You spend three nights in Cairo, fly to Luxor, and sail four nights to Aswan, where the program ends. Both flights are short: Cairo to Luxor takes about 1 hour, and Aswan back to Cairo for your onward flight is a short domestic one.
The pace is slower than our standard Classic program. Cairo gets a full morning for the museum and a separate half day for the old Coptic and Islamic quarters, and each temple on the river has its own visit rather than being squeezed between two others.
It suits couples, friends and parents with adult children who like to sit through a lunch. It does not suit anyone who wants Abu Simbel included, and the sailing days depend on the ship, since ships sail on fixed weekly days.

Arrival. An assistant meets you at arrivals and walks you to a private air-conditioned vehicle. The transfer to the hotel is direct, and your Egyptologist guide helps you check in. Bottled water is included from the first drive.
Evening. Nothing is planned and no meals are included, so the evening is for resting. Your guide calls to confirm the pick-up time for Day 2. Tomorrow starts at Giza, and the days after bring Fustat, the museum and Saqqara before the flight to Luxor on Day 4.
Morning. The Giza plateau comes first, while the light is soft. Breakfast at the hotel, then your guide and the private vehicle take you there, with entrance fees included. You see the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure from the plateau road, go close to the Great Pyramid, and spend time at the Sphinx, whose head scholars generally read as Khafre.
Afternoon. Lunch is not included, and your guide helps you choose a place. The afternoon is in Fustat, in the old part of Historic Cairo. You see the Hanging Church, the Ben Ezra Synagogue and the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As, all inside the UNESCO-listed area, and your guide takes you through each. The vehicle takes you back to the hotel before dusk.
Morning. After breakfast at the hotel, the Grand Egyptian Museum opens the day, with entrance included. The Grand Staircase rises six storeys with a view toward the pyramids. Your guide spends the longest time in the two galleries that hold more than 5,300 objects from Tutankhamun's tomb.
Afternoon. Lunch is not included, so your guide helps you pick a place. You then drive south to Saqqara, about 30 km from Cairo. The Step Pyramid of Djoser is the oldest complete stone building complex known, and Imhotep is named as its architect. Your guide walks you around it and explains how it was built. The private vehicle returns you to the hotel in the evening.
Morning. You check out of the hotel, and the vehicle takes you and your luggage to Cairo airport for the flight to Luxor, which takes about 1 hour. In Luxor you are met and taken to the ship, where you board and have lunch.
Afternoon. You visit Karnak with your guide, entrance fee included. Only the Precinct of Amun-Re is open to visitors. Your guide leads you through the Great Hypostyle Hall, which covers about 5,000 square metres and has 134 columns, then to Hatshepsut's obelisks.
Evening. Dinner is on board. This is the first of four nights on the ship, which sails on fixed weekly days.
Morning. Breakfast on board, then you cross to the West Bank with your guide. The Valley of the Kings lies in a dry wadi opposite Luxor and holds 65 known tombs, so your guide picks three or four that suit your interests. The extra-ticket tombs (Tutankhamun, Seti I and Ramses VI) are not included.
Afternoon. Hatshepsut's temple at Deir el-Bahari follows, with its three terraces and the reliefs of the expedition to Punt. Lunch is on board. The ship sails in the afternoon, and you can spend the hours on the sun deck.
Evening. Dinner is on board.
Morning. Breakfast on board. Edfu is the stop of the day, and your guide takes you to the temple. The Temple of Horus, built under the Ptolemies, stood buried in sand and silt for centuries, which explains its near-complete state. Entrance fees are included. Your guide reads the inscribed walls with you and tells you what to look for before you enter each hall.
Afternoon. The ship continues south while you have lunch on board. The afternoon is quiet, with time on the sun deck and no further visit planned.
Evening. Dinner is on board. Cabins are vacated at 8:00 on the morning you leave the ship, so pack on the last evening.
Morning. Breakfast on board. At Kom Ombo the temple has two parallel entrances, one for Sobek and one for Haroeris, and your guide explains how the two halves mirror each other. Next to the temple is a Nilometer. Entrance fees are included.
Afternoon. Lunch is on board, and by mid-afternoon the ship has docked at Aswan. You visit the Unfinished Obelisk and the Aswan High Dam, built between 1958 and 1970, which created Lake Nasser. Your guide ties the two together: the dam changed the river and the temples you have seen.
Evening. Dinner on board. Pack tonight, as cabins are vacated at 8:00 tomorrow.
Morning. You leave the ship after breakfast, and your luggage goes into the private vehicle. The last morning is at Philae, on Agilkia Island, where the temple complex was rebuilt after UNESCO's rescue campaign. Entrance fee is included.
Departure. The vehicle then takes you to Aswan airport for the flight to Cairo and your onward connection. We time the visit to your flight, and your guide confirms the plan the evening before.
