Balloon flight
Over the West Bank at first light
Three nights in Cairo and three in Luxor, with a dawn balloon flight over the West Bank and a spare morning in case the wind says no.
From, per person$5156 or more travellers · 3-star hotels

This is the one luxury program without a ship. You sleep in a Luxor hotel and spend the week on land, which leaves room for a balloon flight at dawn and a second morning to repeat it if the weather stops the first. If you want a ship, the 7 day luxury Cairo and Nile cruise is the one to choose.
Cairo gets three nights and one major site per half day. Luxor gets three nights, one West Bank day, one East Bank afternoon and a day trip to Dendera. Your guide and car stay with you throughout.
It suits travellers who want to see Luxor well in a short time and will accept a very early alarm. It does not suit anyone with a fear of heights or anyone who cannot stand for the length of a flight in a basket.

Arrival. Your Egyptologist guide meets you at the airport and hands you the week's plan in print. The transfer to the hotel is private and direct, in an air-conditioned vehicle, and your guide stays with you through check-in.
Evening. The rest of the day is free. No meals are included today, but dinner is available at the hotel if you want it. Rest well: Day 2 is a full day, and the early alarm comes later in the week.
Morning. After breakfast at the hotel, your guide and the private air-conditioned vehicle take you to Giza, with entrance fees included. You see the Great Pyramid, Khafre's pyramid and the Sphinx, which stands on the east side of the complex. Your guide explains how the plateau was laid out and what each monument was for.
Afternoon. Lunch is not included, so your guide helps you choose a place and leaves you time for it. The Grand Egyptian Museum follows. It is about a mile north of the pyramids, and its Tutankhamun galleries hold more than 5,300 objects. Your guide walks you through them in order. The vehicle then takes you back to the hotel for the evening.
Morning. Breakfast at the hotel, then the drive to Saqqara, about 30 km south of the city. The Step Pyramid and the tomb of Ti take the morning, with entrance fees included. Your guide reads the wall scenes in the tomb of Ti with you.
Afternoon. Lunch is not included, and your guide helps you choose a place. You then visit the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Fustat, part of Historic Cairo. They stand close together, so the walking is short. The private vehicle returns you to the hotel before the evening traffic.
Morning. After breakfast you check out, and the vehicle takes you and your luggage to Cairo airport for the flight to Luxor, which lasts about 1 hour. Your guide meets you in Luxor and takes you to your hotel, where you check in.
Afternoon. Late in the afternoon you go to Karnak, with the entrance fee included. The Precinct of Amun-Re is the part open to visitors, and the Great Hypostyle Hall has 134 columns. Your guide shows you how the temple grew over time. Lunch is not included today.
Evening. Dinner is not included, and an early one makes sense: tomorrow starts in the dark. Your guide confirms the pick-up time for the balloon.
Morning. A driver collects you before dawn and takes you across the river to the launch field. The transfers are included. The flight lasts at least 45 minutes, depending on the wind. You may see the Valley of the Kings, Deir el-Bahari and the farmland of the floodplain from above. If wind or visibility stops the flight, you try again on Day 6. After landing you have breakfast. Your guide then takes you to the Valley of the Kings in the private vehicle and chooses tombs with you. The extra-ticket tombs (Tutankhamun, Seti I and Ramses VI) are not included.
Afternoon. Hatshepsut's temple follows. Lunch is not included, so your guide helps you choose a place. The vehicle returns you to the hotel for the rest of the day.
Morning. This morning is the spare slot for the balloon. If the wind stopped the flight on Day 5, you repeat it now, and Dendera moves to the afternoon. Otherwise you have breakfast and drive with your guide to the Hathor temple at Dendera.
At Dendera. The crypt has twelve chambers with carved reliefs, and your guide takes you through them. The zodiac in the ceiling is a copy of the relief now in the Louvre. Entrance fees are included.
Afternoon. Lunch is not included, and your guide helps you choose a place. The vehicle then takes you back to the hotel in Luxor, and the evening is free.
Morning. Breakfast at the hotel, then check-out with your luggage in the private vehicle. The last visit is Luxor Temple, a short drive from the hotel, with the entrance fee included. Your guide explains how the temple connects to Karnak and what the reliefs show.
Departure. The vehicle then takes you to the airport for your flight. The timing of the morning follows your flight, and your guide tells you the plan the day before.
