Why travellers choose this trip

This is the shortest of our luxury programs. It keeps one major site per half day in Cairo, then moves to the river for the temples between Aswan and Luxor. The ship is Deluxe or Ultra Deluxe, and the ship sails on fixed weekly days, so the start date follows the ship's schedule.

You travel with your own Egyptologist guide and a private car on land. The only flight is Cairo to Aswan, which is a short domestic flight.

It suits couples and small groups who want Giza, the new museum and the Nile temples in a week without rushing. It does not suit anyone who wants to see Abu Simbel or the Red Sea: this week has no room for either. Mornings on the Nile start early, usually around 6:30.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1
Day 1 · CairoArrival in Cairo

Arrival. Your Egyptologist guide meets you at Cairo airport and helps you through the arrival. A private air-conditioned vehicle takes you to your hotel, and your guide stays with you until check-in is done and tells you the pick-up time for tomorrow.

Evening. Nothing is planned. No meals are included today, so dinner is your choice, and your guide can suggest a place close to the hotel. If you would like a short walk or an early dinner, just say so: your guide stays in touch for that.

Day 2 · CairoPyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum

Morning. After breakfast at the hotel, your guide and the private air-conditioned vehicle take you to the Giza plateau. The entrance fees are included. You see the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx. Your guide explains why Khafre's pyramid looks taller than the Great Pyramid although it is slightly smaller.

Afternoon. Lunch is not included today. Your guide helps you choose a place and leaves you a long break. The vehicle then takes you to the Grand Egyptian Museum, just over a mile north of the pyramids. Its two Tutankhamun galleries hold more than 5,300 objects from his tomb. The Grand Staircase has a view of the pyramids, and Khufu's restored ship is now kept at the museum. The vehicle returns you to the hotel afterwards.

Day 3 · CairoSaqqara and the Citadel

Morning. Breakfast at the hotel, then your guide and driver take you about 30 km south to Saqqara. Entrance fees are included. The Step Pyramid of Djoser, designed by Imhotep, is the centre of the visit. Your guide then takes you into the decorated Old Kingdom tombs of Ti and Mereruka and reads the wall scenes with you: they show daily work in fine detail.

Afternoon. Lunch is not included, so your guide helps you pick a place on the way back into the city. You then cross to Historic Cairo, a UNESCO World Heritage property, for the Citadel and the Mosque of Ibn Tulun. The pace is easy, with time to look out over the city from the Citadel. The private vehicle returns you to the hotel by late afternoon, and the evening is yours.

Day 4 · AswanFlight to Aswan and boarding

Morning. After breakfast you check out, and the private vehicle takes you and your luggage to Cairo airport for the domestic flight to Aswan. Your guide is there in Aswan to take you to your Deluxe or Ultra Deluxe ship. You board, settle into your cabin and have lunch on board.

Afternoon. You visit the temple of Isis at Philae, with the entrance fee included. Your guide tells the story of the move: the temple was taken to Agilkia Island between 1977 and 1979 when the High Dam threatened to flood it.

Evening. Dinner is on board. The ship sails on fixed weekly days, so tonight is the first of three nights afloat, and breakfast, lunch and dinner are all part of the stay from now on.

Day 5 · AswanAswan and Kom Ombo

Morning. Breakfast on board, then the Unfinished Obelisk in Aswan. It is a pink granite shaft still lying in its quarry, and work on it is believed to have started under Hatshepsut. Your guide shows you the shaft where it lies. The ship then sails north.

Afternoon. Lunch is served on board while the ship is on the river. Late in the afternoon you stop at Kom Ombo, about 50 km north of Aswan. The double temple is shared between Sobek and Haroeris, so everything inside comes in pairs, and your guide walks you through both halves. The Nilometer is next to it. Entrance fees are included.

Evening. Dinner and the night are on board.

Day 6 · EdfuEdfu and the sail to Luxor

Morning. Breakfast on board, then your guide takes you into the Temple of Horus at Edfu, built between 237 and 57 BC and among the best preserved temples in Egypt. The entrance fee is included. Your guide reads the inscribed walls with you and shows how the temple is laid out from the pylon to the sanctuary.

Afternoon. Lunch is on board, and the rest of the day is spent on the ship while it sails to Luxor. There is time on the sun deck and nothing to rush for.

Evening. A long dinner on board. Cabins are vacated at 8:00 the next morning, so pack tonight and leave your luggage ready for the private vehicle.

Day 7 · LuxorLuxor and departure

Morning. You leave the ship after breakfast, and your luggage goes into the private air-conditioned vehicle with you. The Valley of the Kings comes first, then Hatshepsut's terraced temple at Deir el-Bahari. Entrance fees are included, but the extra-ticket tombs (Tutankhamun, Seti I and Ramses VI) are not.

Afternoon. Lunch is not included, and your guide helps you choose a place. Karnak follows, where the Great Hypostyle Hall has 134 columns and your guide explains what the carvings on them record.

Departure. The private vehicle takes you to Luxor airport in time for your onward flight. We match the end of the day to your flight time, and your guide tells you in advance if one site has to be dropped.

FAQ

Questions about this trip

Still unsure? Message us on WhatsApp and a real person from our team will answer.

Which ship category do we sail on?

A Deluxe or Ultra Deluxe ship. The ship is confirmed when you book, and it sails on fixed weekly days.

Why only 3 nights on the Nile?

Aswan to Luxor is a 3-night sailing. Luxor to Aswan takes 4 nights, which is why our longer luxury programs use that direction.

Do we see Abu Simbel?

Not in this week. Abu Simbel is about 300 km from Aswan, and our 9 day luxury program is built around it.

Is the last day rushed?

Luxor is a full day, and it is the longest of the week. If your flight is early, we drop one site and your guide tells you which before you board on Day 4.

Tell us your dates. We’ll send a day-by-day plan and a clear price.
