Giza & camel ride
Giza pyramids and the Sphinx, with a camel ride
A family week by road: Cairo, two nights on the Mediterranean in Alexandria, and a Fayoum day with a lake and dunes. No domestic flights.

This program stays in the north and never boards a plane after you land. The longest drive is Cairo to Alexandria, a road of about 220 km.
It trades the temples of Upper Egypt for a harbour fortress, a modern library with a planetarium and a day of lakes and sand in Fayoum. Children who tire of stone halls often like the second half more than the first.
It suits families with younger children, or anyone who would rather not fly. It leaves out Luxor and Aswan, so it is not the trip for travellers who want Karnak and the Valley of the Kings.

Arrival. You are met at the airport by a guide, who helps you through the arrivals hall to a private air-conditioned vehicle. The vehicle drives the family and the luggage to the hotel in Cairo, where you check in.
The evening is yours. The first night is a quiet one so that the children are rested for Giza. No meals are included today, and the guide can name a simple place near the hotel for a first dinner.
Morning. The private vehicle and your guide collect you at the hotel. The Giza complex is about 13 km from the centre of Cairo, so the drive is short. The guide takes you around the three pyramids and down to the Sphinx, with entrance fees and bottled water covered. A camel ride on the plateau comes before the heat builds.
Afternoon. The vehicle brings the family back to the hotel for a break away from the midday sun, and the guide leaves the afternoon open so the children can rest or sleep. Breakfast is included; lunch and dinner are not. The guide helps you choose places the children will eat at.
Morning. The day starts in Coptic Cairo, where the Hanging Church and the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus stand close together. The guide explains what each church is and walks the children between them, since the two stand a short distance apart. Your private vehicle collects you at the hotel and waits while you visit.
Afternoon. The Citadel is next, with the Mosque of Muhammad Ali on its summit, built in the 19th century. Entrance fees are included. Late afternoon is for Khan el-Khalili, a bazaar founded in the 1380s, where the guide helps the children pick one small thing to buy. Lunch and dinner are not included, and the guide helps you find places to eat.
Morning. After breakfast you check out, and the private air-conditioned vehicle leaves Cairo with your guide for Alexandria. The drive is about 220 km, and the vehicle stops on the way if anyone needs a break. Bottled water is on board.
Afternoon. In Alexandria you check in at the hotel, then visit the Qaitbay Citadel, built in 1477 to 1479 on the site of the old Pharos lighthouse. The guide shows the family the ramparts, which look over the entrance to the eastern harbour. The entrance fee is included. Lunch and dinner are not, and the guide helps you choose places.
Morning. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina opened in 2002 and has an antiquities museum and a planetarium. The guide takes the family through the parts that suit children, with the entrance fee included. Pompey's Pillar follows, standing 30 m high with its base.
Afternoon. The Kom el Shoqafa catacombs, found by chance in 1900, go down through several levels, and the guide explains what they were. The rest of the afternoon is left open for the Corniche and an ice cream. The vehicle takes you back to the hotel whenever the family has had enough. Breakfast is the only meal included today.
Morning. After breakfast you check out of the Alexandria hotel. The drive back is the same road, with the same stops if you need them, and the luggage travels in the private vehicle. You check in again at the hotel in Cairo.
Afternoon. The Grand Egyptian Museum shows the Tutankhamun collection in one place, and the entrance fee is included. The guide keeps to a short route so that the children are not worn out before dinner. Lunch and dinner are not included, and the guide helps you choose where to eat.
Morning. Fayoum is about 100 km from Cairo by road, and the private vehicle and guide take you there as a day trip, so you do not change hotels. Lake Qarun lies 43 m below sea level, and about 88 species of water birds winter or nest there. The guide helps the children look for them along the shore.
Afternoon. At Wadi El Rayan you see the waterfalls between the two lakes, and the children can climb the lower dunes. Everyone stays out of the water: the CDC advises avoiding fresh water in Egypt. In the evening the vehicle returns you to your Cairo hotel. Breakfast is the only meal included, so lunch and dinner are your choice, with the guide's help.
Departure. The morning is free for packing and a last walk. Breakfast at the hotel is the only meal included today. After check-out, a private air-conditioned vehicle takes you and the luggage to the airport.
The pick-up time is set by your flight. This is the end of the program, and there is no sightseeing on the day, so the family can leave at an easy pace.
