Best time for a Nile cruise: temperatures, crowds, water and holiday weeks

Short answer: November to March is the comfortable window for a Nile cruise, with Luxor's average daytime highs between 23.0 and 29.5 degrees Celsius. October and April are warmer in the afternoon. June to August reaches about 41 degrees by day, so a summer cruise is planned around the first hours of the morning.

Which months suit a Nile cruise best?

The cooler half of the year suits it, from late autumn to early spring. Wikipedia calls October to February the preferred cruising season, with more tolerable temperatures, and says that between October and mid-April daytime temperatures are cooler and the river locks are open. Wikivoyage is narrower for the country as a whole: it calls November through March the most comfortable months for travel in Egypt.

Think of the year in three parts. The winter core, from November to March, is mild by day and cold at night. The shoulder months, October and April, are hot in the afternoon. The summer, from May to September, is very hot, and a cruise then is built around the first hours of the day.

What are the temperatures in Luxor and Aswan, month by month?

Highs stay under 30 °C from November to March and reach 39 °C or more from May to September. The table gives the 1981 to 2010 mean daily highs and lows from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) World Weather Information Service, with data from the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, for the two cities, which are where a Luxor to Aswan cruise starts and ends.

Month Luxor high / low (°C) Aswan high / low (°C)
January 23.0 / 5.9 22.9 / 8.8
February 25.1 / 7.8 24.8 / 11.0
March 29.5 / 11.8 29.4 / 14.9
April 35.3 / 16.9 35.2 / 19.9
May 39.0 / 21.2 39.0 / 23.1
June 41.3 / 23.5 41.2 / 26.1
July 41.4 / 24.7 41.4 / 26.2
August 41.0 / 24.4 41.2 / 26.0
September 39.3 / 22.2 39.5 / 25.0
October 35.3 / 18.4 35.7 / 20.8
November 29.0 / 12.3 29.0 / 15.6
December 24.3 / 7.8 24.2 / 11.3

Rain is almost absent. Luxor averages 5.2 mm over a year and Aswan 1.2 mm, per the WMO figures. Luxor’s mean humidity, from Wikipedia’s Luxor table because the WMO page does not list humidity, falls from 55 to 57 per cent in December and January to 27 per cent in June, so the hot months are dry heat, not damp heat.

What is a winter cruise like?

Winter is the comfortable season, with two catches: cold dawns and crowds. Luxor’s January low averages 5.9 °C, and the dawn visits that cruises schedule are the coldest part of the day. By mid-morning the sun on the stone makes a light layer enough.

December, January and February are also the coldest months of the year, according to Wikivoyage, so a warm layer for the dawn visit matters. Holiday weeks fall in the same season (the 2027 dates are listed below). We found no official source on how full ships are in those weeks, so ask your booking contact about availability on your dates.

Anyone planning a Christmas or New Year sailing should ask early. Anyone planning for next winter has time to compare ships and cabins.

What are the shoulder months like?

They are warmer by day and quieter. Wikipedia puts October inside the preferred season and says the locks run until mid-April. The numbers fit a split between the shoulder months.

Month Character What to expect on deck and ashore
October Hot afternoons Luxor 35.3 °C by day and 18.4 °C at night; the sun deck is for mornings and evenings
November Mild Highs just under 30 °C, inside the most comfortable window named by Wikivoyage
March Warming Highs near 30 °C; Wikivoyage warns that sandstorms may occur from March to May
April Hot afternoons Highs of 35.3 and 35.2 °C in Luxor and Aswan; spring dust is possible

The Government of Canada says sand and dust storms can occur in spring, creating difficult driving conditions and reducing visibility, and it advises staying indoors with windows closed. A dust day on a cruise is a lost view, not a lost holiday, but it can disturb a plan that depends on a morning visit.

Can you cruise in summer?

You can, and some people do, but you plan the day around the heat. Wikivoyage describes Egyptian summers as hot, dry and very sunny, and the south is the driest part of the country.

The figures are plain. Luxor reaches 41.4 °C in July and Aswan 41.4 °C. The US CDC Yellow Book says summer desert temperatures exceed 38 °C, thirst is a late sign of dehydration and sweat evaporates fast.

On a summer cruise, the 6:00 start is not a nuisance but the whole plan. The ship’s pool and air-conditioned lounge matter more, and midday belongs to the cabin. Summer does not suit older travellers, young children or anyone on medication that affects heat tolerance. The CDC names older travellers and those taking diuretic, anticholinergic or neuroleptic medicines as having a higher risk of heat illness.

Does the water level change from season to season?

Not in the way it once did, and we found no source that ties a month to a problem. The Aswan High Dam ended the annual flood, according to Wikipedia, and its reservoir lets officials hold back floodwater and release stored water over several years. That regulated flow is why the river calendar no longer sets the cruising calendar.

The dam still releases about 55 km³ of water a year on average, per the same page, and about 46 km³ goes into irrigation canals. We could not open an official page listing river depth by month, so we make no claim about low-water months. If a ship has to change a docking point, ask your booking contact to name the replacement.

What about the Esna lock in the cool and hot months?

Wikipedia’s Nile cruise entry says the locks are open from October to mid-April and, from about mid-April, close to manage water levels, so passengers change boats around the lock. We found no official page on lock dates, so treat the Wikipedia statement as a guide and not a schedule.

Ask your booking contact one thing before booking a summer or late-spring sailing: how is the lock handled on my dates? If the answer involves changing boats, ask where and when.

How much sun does a cruise get through the year?

A lot in every month, so shade matters more than forecasts. Wikipedia’s Luxor table lists mean monthly sunshine from 277.7 hours in February to 383.7 hours in July, and 3,860.1 hours across the year. Rain on a cruise day is close to unknown, which is why the decision turns on heat and crowds and not on weather risk.

The practical result is that the sun deck is a morning and evening space for about half the year. Pick a month with that in mind, and ask whether the ship has shaded seating if you plan to read on deck in October or April.

What should you pack for each season?

Pack for the dawn visit, not the afternoon. The same cruise day can span a cold start and a hot middle, and the CDC advises a hat, sunglasses, loose lightweight clothing and sunscreen.

  • November to March: a warm layer for dawn, since Luxor’s lows run from 5.9 to 12.3 °C, plus a light layer for the evening on deck.
  • October and April: light clothing, a hat and a scarf for dust, with a thin layer for the evening.
  • May to September: loose long sleeves for sun, a large water bottle and shoes that can take hot stone.

Whatever the month, drink often. The CDC says thirst is a late sign of dehydration.

Which holiday weeks fall in 2027?

Several fall in the cool season and a few in the shoulder months. Office Holidays gives the following Egyptian dates for 2027, and notes that Islamic dates depend on moon sightings and may differ by a day.

Date in 2027 Occasion What to check
7 January Coptic Christmas Falls just after the Christmas and New Year peak
About 7 February onward Ramadan (expected start, Government of Canada) Opening hours and meal arrangements; Eid follows
9 to 11 March Eid al-Fitr Domestic travel is heavy; book early
2 and 3 May Coptic Easter and Sham El Nessim Local holiday crowds at the river
15 to 19 May Eid al-Adha A busy week for Egyptian families travelling

The right-hand column is our reading of what holidays do to a week, not a statement from the sources. We found no official source on how these weeks change cruise demand, so ask your booking contact. Check the dates against your own year, because the Islamic holidays move earlier every year.

When is the cruise cheapest, and when does it fill?

The sources we opened give no official prices or booking lead times, so we make no claim about the cheapest month or the date a ship fills. Ask your booking contact for the rate by month and for the last date on which your preferred ship and cabin are available.

What the climate data does show is when the days are mild: November to March. A traveller who wants a sailing in that window, on a specific ship, should ask early and compare more than one sailing date.

Which month fits which traveller?

Match the month to your tolerance and your calendar. The table pulls together the figures above.

If you want Look at Reason
Mild weather November or March Highs near 30 °C, inside the comfortable window
The coolest days December to February Highs of 22.9 to 25.1 °C, with a cold dawn
A trip built around mornings June to August About 41 °C by day, so the pool and air-conditioned lounge matter
Milder days for children A winter or spring break Check the holiday dates above and ask about availability early
A shorter cruise before a beach stay February to April The beach adds warmth after cooler river mornings

FAQ

Questions about this topic

Still unsure? Message us on WhatsApp and a real person from our team will answer.

Is a Nile cruise worth it in July?

It works only if you accept about 41 °C days in Luxor and Aswan, 6:00 starts and long afternoons indoors. The CDC warns older travellers in particular about heat illness.

Which month is best for a Nile cruise with children?

A winter or spring break gives milder days. Ask about availability early. Ages 6 to 11 pay half fare on our rate sheet, one child per cabin.

Can the Nile be too low for ships?

The sources we opened do not say. The High Dam regulates the flow and ended the annual flood, but we found no official month-by-month water data. Ask your booking contact whether any docking point changes on your dates.

Do I need warm clothes in winter?

Yes, for dawn. Luxor's January low averages 5.9 °C, and sun-deck breakfasts and early visits are cold before the sun rises.

How far ahead should I book for December?

We found no official figure for how far ahead ships fill. Ask your booking contact for the last booking date for your preferred ship, and ask early for Christmas week.

Does Ramadan stop Nile cruises?

Nothing we opened says cruises stop. Canada expects Ramadan to begin on or around 7 February 2027, so ask about opening hours and meal timing for sailings in February and early March.

Is the sun deck usable in winter?

Yes, in the daytime. Highs of 23.0 to 25.1 °C in January and February suit it, but evenings and early mornings are cold.
